Blue Star Programme – Fact Files of the Seven Leaders of the Easter 1916 Rising
The children in Third and Fourth are busy at present completing the Blue Star Programme. As the Centenary Celebrations of the Easter 1916 Rising is coming up the children in Third and Fourth Class are currently completing fact files based on the seven leaders of the 1916 Rising; Padraic Pearse, Thomas Clarke, James Connolly, Sean MacDermott, Joseph Plunkett, Eamonn Ceannt and Thomas MacDonagh.
The children in Third and Fourth Class are continuing work on The Blue Star Programme. They have been working really hard on this project since September. At the moment they are researching and writing out a recipe from the country that they were given at the beginning of the project. They will then write this recipe out. The recipe is due in on Friday, 5th February 2016.
As you all know Third and Fourth Class are doing the Blue Star Programme this year. It was confirmed today that Mairead McGuinness, MEP, will be visiting Kilbride National School on Friday, 15th January 2016 to speak to the children in Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class about Europe, the European Union and issues within Europe at present. The children have been busy thinking about questions that we could ask Mairead McGuinness when she visits. We are all excited about this visit!
Mrs. Crosby is continuing to read the children “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. The children are really enjoying listening to this story and are learning lots about what life was like in Germany during World War Two. As one activity surrounding this story for The Blue Star Programme the children in Third and Fourth Class had to design a poster to launch this book. They really enjoyed this activity and these posters will be on display in the school during Europe Week in May 2016.
The children in Third and Fourth Class are continuing work on the Blue Star Programme. Last week they started projects on Famous Europeans in pairs. They are busy researching and reading about their person. They will start putting their project together this week. The pairings are as follows:

Annie – Jane, Tara & Alessandro = Vincent Van Gogh
The children in Third and Fourth Class were really excited today! The postman brought packages full of information for some of the children in the class from their country’s embassy up in Dublin. The rest of the children are waiting in anticipation for what the post might bring tomorrow!
The children in Third and Fourth Class have been very busy writing letters and addressing envelopes to their country’s embassy in Dublin. The children were really excitied about sending their letters and are now waiting in anticipation for packages to arrive to the school for them providing them with information on their given European country!!
The children in Third and Fourth Class are really engaging with the Blue Star Programme. At present the children are doing projects on a European country given to them by Mrs. Crosby. Some projects have already been handed in and the rest are due in on or before Wednesday, 21st October 2015. Keep up the great work Third and Fourth Class and we cannot wait to hear all about the different countries and everything you have learned.
As part of the history element of the Blue Star Programme the children in Third and Fourth Class have started listening to Mrs. Crosby reading “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. This is a literary response to World War II which the children will be learning about as the year progresses. In relation to this story the children will be completing various activities based on “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. These activities include:
Book Fact File
The children will design a poster that could be used to launch and promote the book.
The children will create their own crosswords based on the novel.
Character Study = The children will create a word web based on Bruno and Shmel.
The children will draw an illustration to accompany the book.
When Mrs. Crosby has finished reading the story to the children they will write a book review on the story.
The children are enjoying the story so far and we are having whole class discussions on the story as it progresses.
The children In Third and Fourth Class have started their geography projects for this programme. Each child in Third and Fourth class have a European Union country in which they have to complete a geography project on. This project will be due in on or before Wednesday, 21st of October 2015. Every Tuesday for the next six weeks the children in Third and Fourth class will do their learning and their project for homework.

Mrs. Crosby has registered her class, Third and Fourth Class, to complete the Blue Star Project this year. The Blue Star Programme is a primary school initiative that aims to foster better knowledge and understanding of the European Union and how it affects our lives amongst Irish primary pupils through classroom projects and activities. The children in Third and Fourth class started the Blue Star project this week. They all went home on Monday, 14th September with a letter to their parents informing them that we are doing the Blue Star Project this year.
