Step Four – Maths

Senior Infants and First Class

Strand: Measures

Strand Unit: Weight

The children in Senior Infants and First Class loved weighing different objects from our classroom.

We estimated the weight of each object in ‘cubes’ and we used our balance scales to weigh.

We recorded our estimates and the actual weights of each object.

We weighed a pencil, a ruler, a sharpener, a cup, a pencil case, a copy, a banana and a bottle.

The children were very interested and had lots of fun working in their groups.

Senior Infants and First Class

Strand: Shape and space

Strand Unit: 2D and 3D Shapes – Recording and analysing

The boys and girls in Senior Infants and First Class have been learning lots about 2D and 3D shapes.

When the sun came out, we brought our learning outside and participated in a ‘shape hunt’.

The children had to draw as many objects as they could from the school environment for each shape.

We had lots of fun and we realised that our school is full of shapes!

First and Second Class

Maths Strand: Data

Strand Unit: Recording and Analysing Data

The children in 1st and 2nd class loved learning about how to draw graphs within the Maths strand Data.

The children learned that precision is necessary when drawing graphs in data.

They learned how to read and interpret the graphs and answer questions based on the data they had.

First and Second Class

Strand – Measures

Strand Unit – Weight

The children in 1st and 2nd class used balance scales to compare various objects.

They compared objects such as fruit, toys, books, pencil cases etc.

Children learned about heavy and light.

The children were able to observe and experiment using the balances to see what objects were heavier, lighter or weighed the same.

Math’s Week Trail

We formed teams of children from each class in the school.

The children had the challenge of completing a whole school trail both indoors and outdoors within a specified time.

This annual event in our school calendar is always a huge hit with both children and teachers!

Bring on next year!
