Ms Rooney's 2nd Class

We are zooming through the weeks in 2nd class this spring.. We are enjoying the brighter mornings as we come into school and we are all looking forward to the longer, brighter evenings ahead of us. During the month of February, we learned lots about spring and we fully immersed ourselves in the fun activities during Friendship Week. We are really looking forward to making our First Penance; our first big step towards making our First Holy Communion. The school tour has been announced and we cannot wait for that in May. Not long until we are on our Easter holidays so we have lots to squeeze in between now and then, including Seachtain na Gaeilge, St. Patrick's Day and Easter activities. The children in 2nd class are currently learning Amhrán na bhFiann as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge. It can be a tricky song to learn initially but 2nd class are really enjoying it. As always, keep an eye on this page for more updates of what we are getting up to in 2nd Class.

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of January 2024. It has been a hub of activity in 2nd class so far this year. The children settled back in quickly and I really enjoyed hearing all about their wonderful Christmas holidays.

We have been very busy in 2nd class. The preparation for our First Penance is under way. The children are learning to rename in subtraction in Maths. It is a difficult concept but the children have worked really hard and are doing really well. Furthermore, in Maths, we are using Low Threshold High Ceiling Maths Challenges for our weekly Maths Challenge. The children are enjoying the new challenges. The LTHC are a great addition to Maths as they present a challenge that is relevant and that allows ample room for whole class discussion and exploration.

We took some well-needed time out during art and explored braiding using wool. The children immersed themselves in the braiding activity and surprised themselves with their results. The children also constructed some fabulous Chinese lanterns. The Chinese New Year will be celebrated from the 10th February 2024. We have injected some wonderful colour into the room to diminish the January blues away.

We look forward to springing into spring next week and all the fun activities that will come our way.

Check out the photos below - you can see the children are busy making their Chinese lanterns; using cubes to discuss and create the tree diagram as part of a LTHC Maths challenge; making their woollen braids and playing Snakes and Ladders. Some of the many activities the children have taken part in this month.

Welcome everyone!

We have had a very busy couple of weeks in Second Class. Classroom rules were set in place and individual and group reward systems were Introduced. We are still finding our feet but everyone has been working exceptionally hard. I am looking forward to a great year ahead. Keep up the great work, boys and girls!

Check out some of the photos below. They are some of the fun things we have gotten up to so far this month. The highlight so far this year is undoubtedly the swimming lessons. The children are lucky to be taking part in swimming lessons once a week this term. They are enjoying them immensely.

It is important to incorporate movement breaks into the classroom regularly particularly on a rainy day. There are some great photos below of the children performing the very funny Robot Dance in the classroom. We have also danced to the Waka Waka dance, which the children love.

Keep an eye out for more photos to follow on this page.

We look forward to a great month ahead!
